Wicomico County Board of Education Eliminates Evening Meetings to Avoid Civic Engagement

The Wicomico County Board of Education modified their monthly board meeting schedule to hold day meetings only starting in April. Traditionally, every other month is a night meeting, but no longer at this time. Most parents and citizens work during the day, and they know that. Instead of scheduling their meetings in the evening so that citizens are able to attend, this is an obstructive tactic that they have used in the past to avoid civic engagement.

Most of the sitting board members that ran in 2022 stated that they wanted to improve board availability to citizens and even hold town halls to not only listen, but interact with citizens. After a year and a half in office, we have not seen any attempt to make that happen.

The Wicomico BOE meeting schedule is below, and you can see the shift in times.

We hope that the board returns to evening meetings for the 2024-2025 school year.
